Description
The Montgreenan project is dedicated to afforesting an area of degraded pastureland and restoring it to native, biodiverse woodland.
The lack of use in recent years has resulted in the degradation of the pasture and the growth of roadside hedges. The site margins are dominated by mature coniferous woodland.
The Montgreenan project aims to sequester carbon and protect and enhance biodiversity values throughout the establishment of this native woodland. As a naturally wet woodland, the site is also helping to create more wet woodland - one of the UK's most threatened and biodiverse woodland types.
In the long term, the woodland will evolve into a native woodland capable of delivering a range of ecosystem services, in particular, improved biodiversity and carbon sequestration, as well as generally enhancing the landscape.
The site has historically been grazed, but there has been no agricultural use in recent years, with its last use being to provide grazing for horses, and the land has become fully infested with ruderal vegetation, rushed and tussock grasses. As a result of its degradation and the lack of livestock in the broader holding, there will be no displacement of grazing as a result of the project.
Montgreenan is being developed and managed by an experienced and reputable carbon project developer. Treeconomy works closely with the project developer, and will be monitoring the project. Currently, purchases are only available for ex-ante credits from a mixed vintage across the project lifespan. Further details are available.
